Chapter 49

present. being present. here. now.

breathe...

my word for the year is present. i thought the word picked me because i've been a bit neurotic (more than usual) turning a half century. i had no idea how eckhart tollie's  podcast on being present could really come in handy. lets be real honest, not a lot of us were ready for 2020. here is the deal, i run anxious. i didn't realize how bad the anxiety was until i was prescribed medication and the uptight overwhelming sick feeling i had been carrying around the majority of my life was gone. i sought out help when my dad got sick, the antidepressants dulled all my intense feelings both negative and positive. i'm grateful for modern medicine (truly) providing me a life jacket when i was drowning in life. i have since found other ways to manage my mental health without prescription. staying present is one of them. focusing on the now, not two minutes from now, but right freaking now. disclaimer, i have not by any measure of the imagination mastered this exercise, but i'm trying.

Chapter 49 started out great then took a turn, filling the world to the brim with fear and uncertainty. human behavior has always fascinated me. seeing peoples reaction to fear can trigger your own fear, which if goes unchecked can be catastrophic. we are currently struggling during a global pandemic and civil unrest. staying present has helped me just focus on what i really have control of, my response to right now. rather it is washing my hands or just trying to be respectful and kind. if i can focus into the moment-whatever the task is, if i can stay in that moment -- the worry of all the things, ALL THE THINGS seem farther away. before i knew what "social distancing" was my little family was doing it. when my granddaughter was born our entire clan have done everything we can think of to create a bubble in an effort to help her get bigger and stronger. when a new virus came on the scene i tried to focus on what i could do to help minimize the spread. i have even social distance myself from the news and social media because emotional viruses are dangerous too. i choose to be slow in response so i can keep my frontal lobes processing avoiding a fear based response. i try and bring my curiosity to topics i don't agree with or know nothing about and stay open to others views. i choose to wear a mask in public. i choose to make eye contact with those without masks and smile at them, for no other reason than to try and be kind because i don't know their story anymore than they know mine.

being a seeker, i grew up asking questions and then questioning the answers the adults gave me. this was before the internet (not at all saying believe everything on the internet) and we got most of our information from encyclopedia Brittanica or your textbooks from school (yeah, you might want to reconsider some of that information too). i was told i was being disrespectful when i questioned the answers given to me. i accepted this, thinking okay i’m disrespectful but you are still trying to give me a bullshit answer because you don't know for sure and wont just say you don't know. as you can imagine i was in trouble a lot. i feel compelled to mention this was also during a time when it was socially acceptable to inflict physical pain as a primary source of discipline. when my mother told me “you can say anything as long as you use tact” i learned how to challenge others respectfully(yeah, i was still in trouble a lot). i remember being 8 or 9 years old and going to primary at the morman church and catechism at the catholic church and attended bible study with a friend whose family was Jehovah witness. at that young age i was seeking answers and was not afraid of asking hard questions. when i think about that little version of me and my burden of curiosity i realized one very important thing. when i prayed, no matter where i was, i always prayed to the same God. i still talk to Him today. thanking him regularly, asking for guidance and listening for feedback.

the reason i share this is because when we're having our supersized amounts of emotion that feel like an internal tsunami, staying present is the last thing you want to do. if we can just stay in the now and love on ourselves during those moments; it can even help us recognize this in others, and inspire us to try and love on them too. talking to God never hurts either.

getting older...  it makes me laugh because those who are older reassure me its "no big deal", and those who are younger than me ask "do you feel old?" lol. it's all good. if i can just stay away from doing the math, i will be fine.  because the elders and the youth are right, 50 is no big deal AND it means "old" lol.

what a year this has been. i normally take lots of pictures but this year not so much. here is what 49 looked like.

Chapter 48

chapter 48

so here i am heading into the last b-day in my forties. as i inch ever closer to 50 i have to be real honest, i thought i was okay with fifty but i'm not gonna lie it's a huge number in my book. i remember vividly when my parents turned a half century. my mom was totally cool with it. my dad, not so much. i think that is why my sister and i got him a sympathy card that year hehehehe. seriously though, when your a kid every adult is what, fifty lol (okay maybe not too serious).

the older part doesn't bother me, it really doesn't-the math however gets me a little crazy head. i guess thats why the word "open" picked me this year. what does that mean? "not closed or barred. set as to permit passage through. to render unobstructed." like i have mentioned before, when a word picks me it usually means there is gonna be a street fight and some blood shed, because the universe is fixing to teach me something. meh whatcha gonna do. try and be open to the idea that life is temporary- and navigating in that fragility with fierce/tenderness is living. i read a meme the other day that said "you live every day, you only die once" and i was thinking yeah except when your nikki sixx from motely crue, that guy is like a cat #ninelives.

  1. this year my, oldest turned 30 (THIRTY) he would not let me put 30 candles on his cake for practical reasons
  2. finally found a skin product that works for me (not to look young or anything, just to feel good)
  3. went to see bohemian rhapsody in the theater, i forgot so many things about that era and seeing that movie sparked memories #lovelove
  4. i am still a plant killer-yeah during the zombie apocalypse i should not be in charge of the garden because we will starve
  5. ellie and i had our first solo sleep over :) one of us was way more tired than the other
  6. bought a magic eight ball for important decisions :) yes its just as fun as you remember and if you don't like the answer you just try again lol
  7. max played baseball again this year and did so great-seriously becoming quite the ball player! sidenote: my boys were busting my chops about how to keep their mother quiet at a game... bring ellie lol stinkin' brats
  8. my youngest turned 28 - i realize they have been adults for a while but for what ever reason this year i have accepted this lol disclaimer: i will still always refer to them as my boys no matter how old they get!
  9. after many weeks of bedrest for my daughter in-law (because baby elmo - a name ellie and i chose because no one knew his name until a week before he arrived- kept trying to come see us too soon) we welcomed adam to our clan
  10. max started middle school... #nowords
  11. experienced my first vip box seat dmb concert #somuchfun
  12. one carrot cake, two days before the day, three generations, loads of matches, 49 candles and i made a wish and started the last chapter of my forties

Chapter 47

2018 word is clarity. dictionary.com defines clarity as "clearness or lucidity as to perception or understanding; freedom from indistinctness or ambiguity." urbandictionary.com states clarity is "person with a great heart and a beautiful mind. They always know how to make the other smile, and are sure to get the job done by thinking of the best plan. She knows precisely how to make others happy, feel great and is a wish come true, if you have a clarity in your life, keep her. They're the best hopes ever." i think clarity is to "see" without judgement.

observation without judgement is a practice. i have been working on this for a lot of years.
when you look at something-instinctivly you are trying to determine if its gonna hurt you or help you. we are hardwired this way-its survival-right? when was the last time you looked at something without judging it? i think this helps with tolerance. noticing your own response to a topic, does this light you up or is this making you feel heavy-dark and twisty before placing it into the good or bad column or the right or wrong category.

Jim Coroce penned a beautiful song about time. music is really a gift, and how grateful i am to the artists (many who leave us too soon). Jim sang  "If I could save time in a bottle. The first thing that I'd like to do. Is to save every day. 'Til eternity passes away. Just to spend them with you." when you hear someone tenderly wanting to hold onto forever, ahhh it touches you right in the feelers. after you listen to that song you start to think about time (well, i do) and wonder what the hell did we do with all of it? seriously where did it go? the other thought is we are rarely satisfied with the time we are given. rather we be wishing it away "i can't wait until..." or wanting to trap it in a bottle like ole jim wrote.

chapter 47, ah where to begin. i think its been pretty dang good. i have a daughter in law (for the recored i have considered her one of mine for a long time but now its official and legal and stuff). grandkids are growing and getting stronger and smarter. my boys are doing well. it looked like this

Chapter 47 from Monybean on Vimeo.

my clarity
  • if i let my heart see the world, i'm less judgmental
  • if i worry myself sick it may or may not turn out how i want lol
  • i am still funny (both haha and strange ;) )
  • there are two types of people in the world. those who lift people up and those that push people in the mud. i try to be on the lifter side.
  • when i see myself in the mirror i try and overlook my chubby cheeks and chin and focus on my laugh lines (i really love laugh lines)
  • menopause symptoms are REAL- fatigue- lack of focus- adult acne -hot flashes -did i say lack of focus?
  • if you close your eyes and just breath, it can sometimes feel like a pause button
  • life is short/long and living well is a daily practice
  • everything is temporary
  • i can't fix everything (maybe because its temporary and maybe its just not my job. and maybe that wont stop me from trying to fix stuff-i hope not anyway)
  • life gives you moments of weakness so others can be strong (i think it can also make you an idiot so others can be smart)
  • you can't give what you don't have-taking care of yourself is a critical action in day to day
  • good friends are a treasure and should be treated as such (but not in a pirate kind of way. we don't want to burying them and draw a map noooo. you might want to draw a map to help you know where they are unburied lol)
  • sometimes all you need is a nap :)
  • we can disagree and still show respect
  • we are all worthy of love and belonging
  • feeling messy is part of the process
  • you can have faith and have questions
  • intention can be a game changer
  • it is a process to find your truth
  • honoring your gifts bring light to the journey
  • everyone has struggle
  • we are all just bozos on the same bus
  • if you crave inspiration and you "look" for it... you will be inspired
  • everyone lies to themselves and everyone is capable of being honest with themselves-honesty can be hard
  • wholeness.... you. are. enough.
  • you are the only one who knows who you really are-don't give that power to someone else
  • the way you see others is how you see yourself-your not looking through a window you are looking into a mirror
  • having a list of what brings you joy can be life altering and you can take it up a notch just by adding to it
  • at the end of the day you can be grateful or hateful. you can decide how to sleep
  • planning your day around how you want to feel-game changer
  • getting older is a privilege
  • i am certain if i live to be old enough, my face will be deliciously wrinkled-and i will smile (with or without teeth) and have a sparkle in my eye (hash tag life goals)
staying present can be THE hardest practice (for me). there has to be lots of folks that have this mastered, right? I need to find them and hang out, maybe catch what they have. i am either planning for-tonight, tomorrow, next holiday, next birthday, next meal etc etc etc OR fall down the rabbit hole lost in the past. as i'm typing, hearing the sounds of my fingers on the keyboard i'm planning on getting up and pouring myself another cup of coffee. even when i meditate i find myself swimming in the future/past and constantly reminding myself to center in the present. its good practice though, right? stop-rewind-stop-fast forward-stop-fast forward a little-stop. you get the idea.

happy birthday to me

wishes - chapter 46

you get at least one good wish a year. usually over a candle on your birthday cake. since i've entered my forties i have made it a point to have ALL the candles on my cake. i used to dread them... cringe even. these days i appreciate every little flame and it makes that wish a little more, i don't know, awesome.

i make wishes regularly... holding my breath, closing my eyes and saying my wish so loudly in my head. wishing. hoping. praying.

chapter 46

i entered this chapter with physical head-splitting, arms-legs-feet-hand-numbing, can hardly connect thoughts together-pain. i took my grin and bare it attitude to a whole new level. i had a ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) in my neck. when i woke up from my alphabet soup surgery i first wiggled my toes because my biggest fear was paralysis-toes wiggled. then i opened my eyes. my first words were "THANK GOD." the pain was gone. i had new pain because of the procedure, but the old pain-gone. just like that i felt like myself and i knew the pain i was currently experiencing was temporary. my surgeon warned me the torn ligaments would take more time to heal but that pain-deep internal pain-gone.

now i could focus on healing, and focus on my growing family. my granddaughter decided to come into the world a lot early. pain happened again, emotional pain and worry. you know what? i also had hope, pure-honest-undiluted hope. every night i find sleep wishing-hoping-praying for her, for her parents, for her uncle and cousin. i wake up grateful, knowing all those wishful-hopeful-prayers are heard and answered.

this chapter has been, good. with all that has happened, its good. every blessing counted. every miracle bringing me to my knees with gratitude. trying to take nothing for granted.

Chapter 46 from Monybean on Vimeo.

2016 my word was light. light found me, especially when it was dark and twisty. i learned the light didn't aways shine through-i had to look for it-wait for it-believe it was there.

2017 is flow and the controlling side of me is still struggling. its okay. struggle sucks, i'm far from graceful with it, but its okay. its all part of the process, right?

my wish for my next chapter.... i can't tell you that! your not supposed to tell people your wishes ;)

well, happy last day of 46 to me :)

finding my flow...

it has been awhile since i've occupied this space. lots has happened and where to begin? i'll begin with right now, and if it feels right go retro. 2017 the word that picked me was/is flow. what does that mean? dictionary.com says "to move along in a stream; circulate."

my world revolves around my tribe. my tribe grew bigger and this one little girl has stressed me out to the point of break outs and has filled me with so much joy the tears fell out my eyes and ran down my cheeks. its funny how you travel on your journey and then a new person enters your life and you wonder how you ever managed without them. i have thought about this with the births of each of my sons, with my grandson and now my granddaughter. i am beyond grateful to have a tribe who gathers to celebrate and rallies in the face of adversity. life is chalk full of triumph and trouble.

when a word finds me (and right now it is flow) i am learning that it wont be easy lol. it means the universe is fixing to teach me a lesson and it is quite possible it will leave a mark. it is no secret i am a control freak-my kids make fun of this quality i possess every chance they get. i'm a dreamer, a thinker, a planner and a doer. i can be so focused to the point of being oblivious to anything else other than what my sights are on. i have been blessed/cursed with the ability to speak my mind and have always thought "just because its my truth doesn't mean it has to be yours." i imagine you are wondering how can flow be so hard? maybe its clear to you  how bumpy this road is going to be... my daily mantra has been a quote by confuctius “The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.” for the record i have always identified as the oak, tall, sturdy, rooted...

my word picked me before the birth of my granddaughter and i now know why. no matter my focus, prepping or execution of plans - life will throw you a curve ball (even if you think you have planned for every possible pitch). so what do you do? cuss  a LOT, and pray and show up and be as present as you can possibly be. when my granddaughter arrived at 23 weeks i decided right then, i will love her and support her for as long as we have her. you see the doctors prepared us-the odds were 50/50... so this meant going with the flow was the only option. after 199 days in the nicu our girl is home. there are still challenges however there is more hope, and more light with every day that passes.

being the mother of adult children... you also need to "go with the flow." i try real hard to not be the parent that gives my two cents without being asked for said "cash"... i try REAL hard (translation: sometimes i am incapable of keeping my big mouth shut). i am grateful my kids know me and they love me anyway. i am also grateful they learned the importance of boundaries and have no problem setting them with their mother.  when your kids become parents one of the hardest transitions is letting go of the role you played and finding/creating a new job description. i think one of my greatest accomplishments as a parent was influencing my kids to be thoughtful when making decisions and as they travel through their own journey my heart fills with pride when i am able to witness this. i am not at all insinuating mistakes are not made, merely honoring the process.

flow for me (right now) means relaxing (even if its just my shoulders for a few seconds)-breathing (trying to avoid hyperventilating) -letting go (with one eye open lol). its not perfect, but it is real. today my tribe is good and i will hold this goodness close. and when the wind blows i will try to raise the sail and fight the urge to bust out the oars and start the engine :)

light my fire

yes, in my head jim morrison was singing "come on baby" when i wrote that subject line :) my life is a mixed tape and yes jim would be singing, probably on both the A and B side.

i have accepted in order to get light, ya have to walk or sit in the dark. walking around in the dark can be a bit dangerous, your just asking for your toes to get stubbed. no matter-growth can some times be uncomfortable and a little (lot) painful.

january i signed up for three online classes, two of which started in january. brene and jane help me live a more balanced life- feeding my need to beat down my inner critic. brene helps me see my truth and jane helps me paint it. both ladies inspire me to live my own dream. my third class coincidentally called fire starter sessions by danielle and this makes my subject line a little bit more than fabulous!  all three of these remarkable ladies talk about perfection and the importance to show yourself some serious self love. its important to take a good hard look at your story, and observe just how your participating in it. are you the victim? the villain? the vixen? the warrior? the hero? who is in the driver seat? are you facing north but wanting to head west?
are you finding joy? more importantly are you experiencing it? do you know what makes you happy? are you doing those things that make you blissfully intoxicated? are you in the dark? do you know where the flashlights are? does your flashlights need fresh batteries? do you just need to be patient and wait for the sun to come up?are you paying attention to what your good at? are you aware of how your actions are rubbing up against others? are you chasing butterflies? how about squirrels?
and just like that 2016 has one less month to travel through. me being 10 pounds lighter, literally.  asking myself questions... and answering them :)
finding light
and letting it all in.

over the edge...

well, we just crossed over to 2016.

my word for 15 was hope. coming into 2015, i felt a little (a lot) beat up-physically and emotionally. i'm leaving this year a little wiser and a lot more hopeful.

where was my hope you might be wondering??? it was in all the kind words that were given to me. it has been in all the selfless gestures from humans near and far. my hope was wrapped around my wrist :) hope was given to me in boxes and screens. my focus was in search for the things that fill my cup...

what i realized is, my hope was hiding behind the cynical side of myself i never knew existed.

for as long as i can remember i have always wondered "whats wrong with me?' then i started wondering "what is wrong with them?" for the record i still have no idea who "them/they" are. then it shifted. my thought process changed ever so slightly and i realized there is only something wrong if i keep looking for something wrong. now don't get me wrong, i'm ridiculously optimistic but i'm also a realist. things change, and they stay the same. the key is to put down the measuring stick and simply count YOUR blessings and be YOUR best self (even if today you're a wreck).

simply.
this too shall pass.

you can't undo what you did, get caught up in what your gonna do... you can only do what you do :) only control what your doing right now. right now i'm typing words, for myself and who ever else wants to pay attention. i'm sharing what is on my mind, and hopefully influencing in a small way. i'm traveling my own journey, and dancing to the beat of my own drum. singing louder than i "should" and making up the words i don't know. laughing. showing up and being present.

this was the year i realized my happily ever after doesn't resemble what i thought it would. things changed- dreams change. right now, things are good. my ever after is still pretty stink'n happy :) i still worry about my clan-not in a nervous bite your nail kinda way-just a momma kinda of way. i wish for them to always be a little more than "okay" on the not so good days and i pray they hold tight to all of their happy.

2015 from Monybean on Vimeo.

my hope is those who i am lucky enough to meet will leave a little happier :)

what is in store for 2016... light. it only takes one little word.

what you love

you love who you love.
September one
Chapter ONE

i have always ALWAYS been drawn to the "unlovable"... or what was seen/shown as "unlovable". i realized once i became facebook "friends" with some of my extended family, it isn't just me. the clan from which i come from finds beauty below the surface. looking past the disfigurement or horrific story and seeing the beautiful warrior that lays beneath.

this doesn't mean i don't enjoy snacking on eye-candy, because that would be a huge fib! who doesn't like seeing a beautifully sculpted man with a little bit of dirt in his eyes :) you like what you like, you love what you love-it's really that simple.

when your opinion matters. when you are younger you try to please/piss off the adults around you. its human nature, right? so it becomes difficult to determine what you really like, want, feel, see -whatever, fill in the blank. asking yourself, am i doing this for me or someone one else? don't get me wrong, influence is good, its necessary. but (a big but) its important to stand in your own truth. i'm not sure where i'm going with this or if i have made my point. ????

for a long LONG time i had this indescribable drive to prove "them" wrong. "them" being i don't even know who "them" are... faceless strangers and familiar humans, i guess. when "they" would tell me something or i felt that "they" believed something, it was like -challenge accepted i'm going to prove "them" WRONG. this is a HUGE part of my personal story. approaching life like this can be a little (a lot) dangerous and at the same time... freeing. because i've learned sometimes "they" were right and sometimes "they" were wrong, and i didn't take "their" word for it.

i have always appreciated people who are rough around the edges, the more difficult parts of the story, the less than perfect ending to a tale. equally i appreciate small soft simple moments...  you love what you love. its really that simple.
i love:
  • mornings (especially if its rained the night before)
  • laughing to the point its hard to breath
  • the sound of an acoustic guitar
  • putting on brand new socks
  • light bulb moments
  • finding cash in your pocket that has made it through the laundry cycle
  • the feeling of gesso on an altered book
  • getting real hugs
  • passing the time waiting by making up stories
  • the UPS guy bringing packages
  • cards in the mail
  • making my hair stand up with shampoo, in the shower
  • hearing a song 30 years later and knowing all the words
  • fresh cotton sheets
  • being inspired to try harder
  • remembering where you put something
  • remembering the name of the "thingamajig"
  • the smell of sandalwood
  • reusable sandwich bags
  • having hard conversations that end in understanding
  • good ear buds
  • jeggin jeans
  • white t-shirts
  • black converse sneakers
  • a good moisturizer
  • new notebooks
  • post it notes
  • felt tip pens
  • candles on cakes
  • hanging your feet over the edge of the bridge and watching the water flow
  • finding the point
  • mason jars
  • encouraging people
  • NCIS on neflix with my morning coffee

1856 days before i turn FIFTY-five zero- one half of a century!!!

for whatever reason i have been getting over the top excited about turning fifty. this up and coming birthday (29 more shopping days folks) i will turn 45, which means i will have half a decade until i get to put FIFTY candles on my cake (its happening-every last fire hazard!) i used to cringe at birthdays. my twenty fifth birthday i had a bit of a melt down. the whole getting older, considering botox- worried about coloring my hair, worried about gravity, i had crazy head kinda thoughts...  it seems once i crossed the forty line, my view changed in a really rad, celebratory kinda way.

my half a century celebration will have lots of thought put into it- i may or may not have people dress formally, or maybe a themed party. right now i'm just brain storming, putting all the ideas on the table! i know for sure i want to have a 7 day celebration leading up to the big day :)

i haven't made a "list" in some time. i have 1,856 days to complete... fifty things before fifty:

  1. plan more than one out of country trip (BALI, Ireland, Brazil, Spain, Greece)
  2. attend a art retreat (hopefully in bali)
  3. sell blood for my out of country trip (because i forgot to do this when i went to australia)
  4. eat cherries right off the tree (i haven't done this since i was a kid)
  5. launch pumpkins from a giant sling shot.
  6. make and deliver kind bombs

  7. participate in the relay for life
  8. have a family entry in a color run (and wear tutu's or capes or fairy wings)
  9. go to the beach (more than one, and more than once)

  10. dust off my big camera and fall in love again
  11. start a photo project
  12. finish a photo project
  13. participate in an art exhibit (the thought of this scares me in a good way)
  14. make a art journal out of recycled supplies
  15. do something with my back yard
  16. read more books and blog about them (for the record i hated book reports when i was a kids lol)

  17. find art centers and explore them (this may need to be a list of its own)
  18. make/create my own art studio/space
  19. start writing a book
  20. find a groovy old type writer that works and USE the crap out of it

  21. go to flea markets
  22. go to farmer markets
  23. eat more whole foods
  24. try to grow something besides 6' purple flowered weeds
  25. ask for a hammock and stand
  26. find a kitchen table and chairs that will grow as my family grows :)
  27. organize my closets
  28. paint another room with color

  29. go on more picnic's
  30. wear a crown of daisies for my birthday
  31. throw a back yard party (with groovy lanterns and sparklers)
  32. start a meditation journal
  33. create an on line class
  34. grow my bangs back out
  35. pop popcorn the old fashioned way for movie night

  36. become a yogi
  37. create a budget
  38. start a travel account
  39. go on a bike ride with my family
  40. date
  41. recycle more
  42. shop less
  43. make birthday cakes from scratch (at least three)
  44.

i left some blank spaces so i can add to the list when inspiration kisses me :)

i miss you daddy, happy fathers day

when i was a kid, my dad would tell me "Pup, we are not like other families." i used to think, "yeah, so." i guess there were times i wanted to have a regular family, but i never really dwelled on that thought for too long. mostly i didn't really care about that. my family situation was what it was, and i had better things to do than worry about the average family dynamics. when i became a parent i realized he was confessing to me a feeling of inadequacy... when you become a mom/dad your world turns on its side, and you view everything a new. so i didn't have a normal childhood. fast forward forty years i can see clearly.... who the hell does? parents just do the best that they can. i have listened to people over the years making statements like "man, if i could go back i would..." yeah, i've never really been that person. first off i would never want to rewind and go back. i like right now, just fine :) and here is the deal, i couldn't be here right now if back then was different.

we all have lessons we need to learn and grow from... do you ever wonder why you find yourself in the same situation with different scenery? maybe its because you still haven't learned that particular lesson. its not bad or good, it just is.

my father taught me many things. there are many instances i wish i could talk to him again and have a conversation... i didn't always agree with my dad, and i never had to apologize for that. i am grateful and i miss him.

the universe will give and take away gifts (everything is temporary). even though i lost my father, i was given a son who looks and acts a lot like him :)

on fathers day my heart aches. most everyday i am an adult, but there are some days i am just a little girl who misses her pappy. today i'm grateful i had a father for as long as i did, because i know there are people out there who didn't. i am grateful for my family dynamics no matter how a like or not they were to other families. i am grateful for my fathers no nonsense approach and how hard he was on me, because i developed a strong back bone that has enabled me to speak my truth. i am grateful i was able to be strong for him when he was battling cancer.

i miss you daddy, happy fathers day.

why am i up in the middle of the night?

i'm noticing a pattern. every morning about 2 am. i find myself WIDE awake. so i drink some tea and try to hook up with the sandman. i'm on my second cup of "bedtime" yogi tea, still no z's. i listened to this and have been inspired to find "silence". SIDE NOTE: i find myself trying to outrun silence lately. even in the witching hour, i find myself piddling around-with thoughts swimming, rather than just sitting in the silence. no guilt or shame, just a simple truth. noticing without harsh judgement. falling in love with right now. because right now is all you have. so what do i love right now? opening my heart and giving myself space to wonder about life, love, relationships, conflict. my blog has been pretty quiet. my words flow with pen and paper (or paint and markers). so what do i think about at 4 in the morning (because the sandman stood me up)? after i accept my day started earlier than i would like... i think about what i want. i think about the billion things i need to do or want to do. i think about empty nests, and hard days and trials by fire. i think about where i've come from and how i got here. i think about making coffee and giving into the idea i'm not going back to bed. i think about time and how fleeting it is... i think about never backing down from a fight and why that is. i think about being bold and loud and trying to make peace with this side of me. i think about saving man kind. i think about all my little and not so little worries. i think about not having a shred of control... i think about the laugh lines and silver strands. i think about needing to go to the store. i think and think and think...

so why the ramblings? because right now, in this moment, it feels like a good idea to type all this down. i still don't know why i'm up, so i'm leaning into it and just experiencing the quiet and maybe, just maybe i can find stillness in the silence.

daring 2014 hope for 2015

i usually start my year end blog around october... taking inventory and measuring the results. i dared not to this, this year. i road out 2014 until about 9:30 pm on 31DEC14 (yes i went to bed early) before looking back.

my four letter word for the year was DARE

so what was so daring about 2014, you might ask... i dared to dream BIG. i dared to be over the top excited about an adventure. i dared to get on an air plane and fly across an ocean for more than 10 hours, with the knowledge that these days you can LOSE a freakin' plane. i dared to travel to a place where they are known for deadly animals, insects, snakes, fish and CAMP in a TENT! i dared to walk the streets of a huge city without having any idea if we were in a good/shady part of town. i dared to close my eyes and open my heart and just be present. i dared to dance like no one was watching - surrounded by thousands of people. i dared to ask complete strangers if i could drive their boat (catamaran). I also dared to look the envious passengers in the eye and think to my self loudly "yup i'm driving this ship" :) i dared to swim with tropical fish and hold a blue star fish. i dared to add to my "title" - World Traveler! i dared to light 44 candles in my house and wish as i blew them out. i dared to enter my dark and twisty time giving myself permission to feel ALL my feelings for as long as it takes.

i've learned to say without panic or heart palpitations "i'm middle aged". I have also learned that middle age is a lot like going through puberty again. your body is doing strange things and your hormones are a bit erratic and you grow hair where you have no idea of any good reason to have hair there! speaking of hair, i've learned it is a curious thing to become more salt than pepper.

over all it was a good year. except for one thing... i have misplaced my hope. i can not really pin point when this happened exactly. its like one day i noticed i didn't  have very much and before i knew it, it was gone. (deep breathe) i usually psychoanalyze the reason to death, but i find myself realizing this is the ebb and flow of life - kind of a high tide low tide type of view. i've made a conscious decision to not look for the reason why, but accept this to be and move on to finding it again.

my word for 2015, you guessed it HOPE. there are many definitions for hope, but my favorite is : to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence. i think i'm off to a dashingly good start ;)

on this day thirteen years ago i said good bye to my dad. i said lots of things to him that day... saying good bye was the beginning of the hardest things i've had to do. i miss him regularly. i miss him calling me and reminding me we hadn't spoken in a while - this was usually in some cartoon voice :). i miss him the most around my (our) birthday. i miss him telling people my favorite cake was chocolate even though my favorite cake has never been chocolate... HIS favorite cake was chocolate. i miss us arguing about the meaning of life. i miss his influence and his brutal honesty. i miss his laugh and the way he would light up a room just by entering it. i miss his dumbfounded look when i would say something smart. i even miss when he would embarrass me in public on purpose.

thirteen years ago my oldest was thirteen. my dad has been gone half of his life... lots has happened in these thirteen years. i survived being a single parent to two teenage boys and watched them grow up into men right before my eyes. i witnessed the birth of my grandson, and just like that became a grandma. i helped take care of my granny b until her very last heart beat... i've still been learning how to live in the world without them in it. seriously, thirteen years doesn't seem that long ago...

sometimes

sometimes you can get lost in your thoughts... sometimes i get lost in a thought or an idea or a memory and then i swim there for awhile. sometimes just treading water. sometimes floating. sometimes kicking and splashing. sometimes fighting the waves that are crashing down with the high tide... sometimes you need more than a life jacket or floatation device. sometimes you wish you could just lay on the wet sand letting the sunshine kiss your shoulders... sometimes the water looks better from a distance.

seasons are changing again. there is a hint of coolness in the air. summer is passing and fall will soon be brushing the leaves on the trees...

moments

our days are made up of them:

little-big-funny-scary-sexy-revolting-happy-devastating

... moments

in a blink your life can change. in a breath, you may never see the world in the same light ever again. in a heart beat things can never be undone. with a touch things may be unrecognizable.

moments pass too fast/slow all in the same instance.
just like you're wanting/not wanting to know.

with age comes wisdom.
my conclusion... no matter what you do, you can never predict the outcome-the universe has a way of throwing curve balls, reminding you, your not in charge.

so what do you do with this? you laugh, you love, you cry, you get angry.

in a moment, this too shall pass.

looking for a silver lining...

how do you want to feel?

there i was.
up at five on a saturday.
this means i rested well... (and quite possibly over being jet lagged)

the rain coming down, my mind and heart open. i have been knee deep in the gifts of imperfection part two. i hate being and feeling behind and for this course i am both. i have no guilt or shame in any of this because i was on a life changing adventure with my best friend in a land far far away... OZ.

the first part of this course helped me to find my authentic self-k thats not entirely true-it helped me remember my inner child, in a really beautiful reunion with dancing and singing and tears of happiness. i can't say i talk to her everyday. i can say she is with me everyday-even becoming who i am-again.

while i have been on this journey of finding peace and pieces of me, i was introduced to the idea of desire mapping. i become inspired to ask myself "how do you want to feel?" this is an amazing exercise.

right now.
this very second, i want you to get up and go to the nearest mirror. i want you to look yourself in the eye and ask "how do YOU want to feel?". if you say "i don't know", ponder this and revisit the question. OH and come back and finish reading my babble ;) . if you said you don't know, i can relate. i had to get out my trusty notebook-not the organized notebook that i write in with chronological purposes, but the OTHER notebook that has doodles and random rants and grocery lists and my grandsons drawings. first i started writing down words-randomly-without a whole lot of thought-purging on a blank page. once i was done, i went back and framed the words that really spoke to me. i went back to the mirror and asked the question again. this time i had an idea of what i would say back to my reflection. i wrote on my mirror the answer (in fact its still there). this journey has caused me to realize important things. first-i'm not the worst case (which is good news). i'm not the best case (which means there is room to grow). i'm not judging-merely trying to have an objective view, a reference point.

i'm ready to move forward.

recently i ordered the desire map and i am starting to look at things around me with a new intention. internally i am letting go and cleaning out the closet. i am making room to grow and feeling good through the process. i should mention getting to this place was dark and twisty a lot of the time. lots and lots of doubt and shame. lots of time spent not feeling comfortable in my skin and in a miserable headspace. its all temporary-the good and the bad and i'm choosing to lean into ALL of it.

i am currently in deep thought. pondering my core desire feelings. if you want, we can share :)

Mine:
love
happiness
courage
hope
peace
to live with my whole heart

okay now tell me yours.

being five

i had to make sure he didn't turn into a big kid over night... for the record it sure feels that way. i wrote about him saying Good bye ONE Hello TWOtwo days left of being twovery last day of being three and being FIVE.just.like.that. even though there were lots of days in between then and now... it still feels like it happened in a blink.

Five from Monybean on Vimeo.

while he was five he:
began drawing pictures and making up stories.
mastered lower case letters in the alphabet.
started kindergarden.
learned to read (really well).
rides the bus like a boss.
struggled a little socially.
challenged his teacher because he learns new things quickly.
favorite food started out as mexican lasagna but now is pizza.
for a week he decided his favorite cake was "chocolate german" but recently went back to carrot cake.
says "reg-a-ler" but stopped saying "buzzert" (desert).
is still a morning person.
still dances when a song inspires him, only these days he gets embarrassed if he notices someone watching.
his smile changed in a single moment when he lost his first tooth and about a week later he lost the second (which was good because his adult teeth were growing behind them:) ).
worries about things being "right".
has started dreaming at night more vividly and is excited to share what he has dreamt about.
has school friends.
count to six in spanish.
likes to dress up in a suit.
likes his hair to be combed like "robin" (a comb over to the side) rather that "up" (in a mohawk).
likes science projects and math (oh and recess).
had his very first school program.

he still loves super heros and he told me when he grows up he wants to be a "men in black" hehehehehe (of the Will Smith variety). what an incredibly smart and witty boy :) happy birthday maximus!!

getting ready

you may or may not know i'm soon to be a world traveler. i am excited. i am scared. i am excited. i am scared. i'm excited again.

i have rituals- they have changed over the years- things like checking to make sure the refridge is closed tight, the garbage is taken out, windows are shut-i'm leaving for a while and when i come back i want my home to be as a left it-kind of rituals. with the people that i love i go through a similar process. telling them i love them in a big way giving them a hug and a kiss and a hug and a squeeze of the hand and then i look at them and take a mental picture-lately i have been taking selfies :) like i said my rituals have changed/evolved over the years. i also go through the if i die this is where the important papers are... i have been having this conversation with my boys for YEARS. when they were little i wanted them to be prepared, and we needed to have a plan, ya know-just incase. this conversation freaks them out a little (LOT). i really do not do this to freak them out - i do it so that i know they have tools and well, we have a plan.

this trip i'm going on caused me to update my important papers and have... the TALK. my boys humor me while they are visually uncomfortable. we talk about what to do with stuff and it usually ends with one or both of them say -this is dumb your not going to die. to be honest, i'm totally okay with the conversation ending like this, it works, ya know :)

one of the driving forces of me going on an epic adventure like this one is-life is precious-and short... so i'm going toward the joy, every single chance i get :) rather its eating dessert before the main course or dancing around the house to a new song i just downloaded OR flying around the world with my best friend because-i can!

i'm still struggling with what to put in my back pack (this is my packing ritual lol) but i'm ready to take this giant leap and enjoy every single moment with reckless abandon.

simplifying in 2013

i started this year with an idea, one word - simplify

i attempted to create a 365 of me. the project morphed into more than just a photo a day... lots of pen to paper, with honest words in not so pretty handwriting-filling my art journal with mixed medium. this project helped me find, well, a new/old version of me. dusting off old dreams which inspired new dreams. once i noticed i was fighting the process in a self defeating sort of way, i let go... free falling into discovery. your perception is your reality. altering your reality is as simple as changing your mind. writing this it sounds simple-the process for me was more like one of the battle scenes in the lord of the rings... i must admit the view on the other side- epic.

letting go of ideas/ideals
  • accepting simple things
  • enjoying simple pleasures
  • leaning into simple moments
  • appreciating simple gestures
  • inhaling a simple breath
  • exhaling simple relief
  • surrendering to a simple plan
  • simply cutting myself some slack
okay maybe it wasn't simple in the beginning (or now)... however bumpy the process has been, i have committed to simply try.

this year has been filled with permission-

  • permission to be messy without guilt or shame
  • permission to let go of perfect
  • permission to fail
  • permission to have fun
  • permission to do what ever the hell i want to do :)

2013 has been filled with songs-lots and lots of songs. 13 shows in 2013. humming and grooving and singing and dancing to live melodies. i break into song-always :) its what i do-because life inspires me to sing (mostly off key) changing the words along the way and i'm not shy about it :)

this is the year:
  • i blew out 43 candles (literally) during a massive rain storm AND power outage.
  • i cut 16" of hair.
  • i lost twenty pounds.
  • julius and i started living alone, while having awesome neighbors :).
  • i planned an out of country trip.
  • my mantra became "not my journey, not my journey, not my journey, not my journey" (when you are the parent of adult children, you'll get it).
  • i experienced vertigo for about 3 months. i never found out the cause, i just know i don't have a brain tumor or MS.
  • i stopped practicing yoga (mostly because of the vertigo thing BUT plan on picking it up again-not the vertigo but the yoga :) )
  • i celebrated my oldest sons 25th birthday which also means i have been a momma for a quarter of a freakin' century.
this year was full of life... it had peaks and valleys and success and struggle, full of tears and laughter, hope and despair, loss and gain, happy moments and fits of rage- in the really simple and genuine kinda way life happens. my personal growth has been the biggest accomplishment. tapping into all my senses- not just hearing, seeing, smelling or tasting.. but experiencing it, by how it makes me feel. doing more of what makes me feel good and less of what makes me feel not so good. spending more time connecting to and reflecting on the experience.

nothing is forever-NOTHING. coming to terms with the reality of everything being temporary, and appreciating its beautiful fragility. by taking self portraits nearly everyday and writing or painting regularly has allowed me the opportunity to be present, to be less judgmental/critical of myself and have proof of being here.

2013 from Monybean on Vimeo.

this year i have went through complicated to get to simple :) funny the way it is, if you think about it.

what does 2014 bring? i don't have a crystal ball-i do however have one word... my word for 2014 will be Dare.
